Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Too late for one and too early for the other? No, we hope you keep the spirit of "goodwill to all," through the year. And we also wish that you keep the dream of a better tomorrow for all as one of your goals.
New Year's Celebrations and Traditions Around the World
China:
They hide all the knives for the day so that no one cuts oneself, because that may actually cut the entire family good luck for the coming year.
Thailand:
A special three–day water festival on April 13–15 marks Songkran, the Buddhists' celebration of the new year. In small villages, young people throw water at each other for fun. People also release fish into rivers as an act of kindness.
Brazil:
Boas Festas e Feliz Ano Novo means "Good Parties and Happy New Year."
First Draft
I have finished the first draft of Two Miles High and Six Feet Under, the second book in the Andrew Coyle series. The historic/mystery novel is set in Leadville, Colorado (the Two Mile High City) in 1896 the site of the Ice Palace, an effort to attract visitors to Leadville in the wake of the depression of 1893.
The protagonist is a young lawyer hired to investigate possible embezzlement of Ice Palace funds and a subsequent murder. His wife unexpectedly comes from Denver to visit him and to see the Ice Palace. The scene takes place on New Year's Eve (coincidentally) before the Ice Palace Grand Opening on January first, 1896. Andrew Coyle, wife Sarah, and daughter Leona (Onie) are staying in a hotel room on New Year's Eve. Onie is already asleep.
Excerpt
At six minutes before midnight somebody in the street with a fast watch or an itchy trigger finger started what sounded like a war up and down Harrison Avenue. Gun shots and shot gun blasts shattered the silence of the sky above to punctuate the symphony of firecrackers and sky rockets left over from the Fourth of July.
Luckily, Onie did not wake up at midnight to see in the New Year. Coyle was relieved because at that point he did not want another confrontation with Sarah.
Coyle kissed Sarah and Sarah kissed Coyle and it was officially 1896. They went to bed soon after, and as Coyle had suggested, they celebrated the coming of the New Year in style.
Eventually the shooting, noise making, and horns died out. About 3:30 A.M. a single gunshot woke Coyle. He thought, finally the last hurrah of the celebration, and rolled over and with visions of Leadville, a violent town, and run away toboggans, he soon went back to sleep.
More New Year's Customs
Greece: There are many special dishes that are prepared at New Year, but the most important dish is Vassilopitta or St Basil's cake, inside the cake is placed a silver or gold coin.
United States: In the US we believe that black-eyed peas are lucky. We also watch the Championship football games in stadiums or on our televisions. Kissing strangers at the stroke of Midnight is also more acceptable on New Year's Eve that at other times of the year.
