Denver's Television History
Denver's TV history was not very different from that of most cities. Our goal is to bring back memories and remind the reader of their city's television growing pains. No matter when you first joined the TV audience, you have witnessed great strides from that day until now.
Last week we discussed Denver's original television channel, KFEL Channel 2. Additional channels came on site quickly. October 12, 1952, KBTV Channel 9 was the second television station to sign on in the Denver market after KFEL-TV which started telecasting just three months earlier on July 18. Channel 9 originally operated from studio facilities located in a converted former car dealership. The station initially served as a primary affiliate of CBS, but also carried programs from ABC and NBC through secondary affiliations with both networks.
Then we had choices, two channels to pick from. But you had to walk over to the TV set and manually switch to the other channel - 2 or 9.
The next station soon followed. November 1, 1952, KLZ-TV was founded by the Oklahoma Publishing Company, which also owned KLZ radio. KLZ-TV immediately took the CBS affiliation from KBTV (Channel 9, because of KLZ radio's longtime affiliation with the CBS Radio. The fourth channel to enter the market, a year later, was KOA-TV Channel 4. Founded by Metropolitan Broadcasting (partly owned by famed comedian Bob Hope), owners of KOA radio Channel 4 immediately assumed the NBC affiliation from KBTV, Channel 9, due to KOA radio's longtime affiliation with and ownership by the NBC network.
The picture becomes increasingly clouded as stations changed their call letters and network affiliations. Personnel crossed lines. News anchor Bob Palmer left Channel 7 to join Channel 4. Sports announcer Star Yelland and weatherman Warren Chandler moved from 4 to 7. Sheriff Scotty became Blinky the Clown on independent Channel 2. Etc, etc, etc.
Next week the original four stations in the Denver market are overwhelmed by the advent of CABLE. Stay Tuned.
The Funny Thing Is...
My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds, only 15 to go.
I don't mean to brag but I finished my 14-day diet food in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
I love being over 70 - I learn something new every day and forget 5 others.
The first time I got a universal remote control I thought to myself, “This changes everything."
Don’t you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.
University of Colorado Weather Tracker
Frank Eparvier, Principle Investigator and a senior research scientist at CU's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics announced the scheduled launch of a Colorado-conceived, built, and research-tested weather tracker. EXIS is short for Extreme Ultraviolet and X-ray Irradiance Sensors. EXIS will detect solar flares and measure ultraviolet lights and X-ray activity. The package of instruments will be carried into space aboard a missile/satellite built by Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado.
A solar flare is a sudden release of built-up magnetic energy on the sun. This happens sporadically as much as twelve times or more a day and as seldom as none a day. The released light waves can interrupt airlines, telecommunications, and power-grids among other things, according to Tom Woods, associate director of the
NOAA lab.in Boulder.
Kids Do Say the Darnedest Things
Johnny: Daddy you said you would take me to the zoo today.
Father: It's raining today.
Johnny: But Daddy you promised.
Father: It's pouring down rain. You wouldn't have any fun.
Johnny: OK, you go, leave me at home.
