We attended a University of Colorado Alumni presentation about the University's participation in the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission. The word "Mission" does not exactly fit but the "N" makes a better acronym. And it actually is a mission with a "M". So CU can call it MAVEN if they want to.
MAVEN Science Objectives:
Determine the composition and structure of the upper crust of Mars and understand how the Sun and wind control these properties.
Determine the rate at which gas of Mar's atmosphere is being lost to space today.
Measure characteristics of the upper atmosphere which will allow us to estimate how much gas has been lost to space throughout Martian history.
How big is the MAVEN spacecraft? From "Gull-Wingtip" to "Wingtip" it is about the length of a full-sized school bus and weighs as much as a full-sized SUV fully loaded. It was launched into space with an Atlas V-401 launch vehicle, and will take ten months to reach Mars.
For complete information visit http://lasp.colorado.edu/MAVEN and follow on Facebook and Twitter at MAVEN2Mars.
The presentation certainly makes one think about the vastness of the universe and how little we know and understand compared to the mysteries of space. We enjoyed the time together with fellow Alumni and had real good breakfast.
