Update
At this point the Brazilian Officials version of the incident seems the more creditable of the various stories. An Olympic official has made a statement that Rio De Janeiro police should take a "boys will be boys" attitude. We don't know if that is the official position or not.
Robbery or not. There are different versions of what happened on in Rio. Somebody is not telling the truth, but all the evidence so far, looks like four swimmers need to have more consistency in their stories.
The Brazilian story from police is that the swimmers trashed a filling station restroom. The outside door to the restroom was locked so one swimmer kicked it in. This brought a filling station security guard who restrained the foursome until police arrived. The guard was armed, but claims he did not take out the gun. (Was this the supposed robbers in police uniforms in the swimmer's story?) A filling station manager arrived and demanded money for the door. The money was paid, and the athletes returned to Olympic Village. The surveillance tape shows the four laughing and joking as they checked in.
Two stories with different endings. Consequences could involve jail terms or an international incident.
Woman's Beach Volleyball
The U.S. team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and playing partner April Ross won the Bronze Medal by winning the third place match in Woman's Beach Volleyball.
Quotes
“If you fail to prepare, you’re prepared to fail.” – Mark Spitz
“You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” – Michael Phelps
“Adversity cause some men to break; others to break records.” – William A. Ward
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” – Dan Gable
Swimmer Michael Phelps
Phelps added two more to his collection of gold medals to bring his lifetime to 22 golds, and 27 total medals. With one more relay to follow. 28 would be a nice round number. Wouldn't 30 after the next games be even rounder numbers, Michael?
Olympic Trivia
Youngest Medal Winner, Dimitrios Loundras, a Greek gymnast who participated in the 1896 Athens Olympics was 10 years and 218 days old when he won his medal.
Oldest Medal Winner, Oscar Swahn of Sweden, became the oldest gold medalist when he won gold at 64 years old in 1912 in shooting, and the oldest medalist when he won silver in 1920 at age 72 years, 281 days old.
East German Christa Luding-Rothenburger is the only person to win medals at the Winter and Summer Games in the same year (1988), winning gold in speed skating at Calgary and a silver in track cycling in Seoul. (This feat is no longer possible due to the staggering of the Winter and Summer Olympic years.)
The number 8 is considered lucky in China. Coincidentally (?) the Beijing Olympics, 2008, began at exactly 8:08:08 PM on 8/8/08.
The 1904 St. Louis Olympics were the only Olympics in which distances were measured in yards instead of meters.
Excerpt from Murder in the Rockies
(Andrew Coyle talking to livery stable owner Old Baldy)
Old Baldy slipped the bit into the horse’s mouth. “Next thing you know the women will want to vote,” said a disgusted Baldy.
“Only a matter of time.”
“Constitution didn’t say nothin’ ‘bout all women being created equal to men. Those pesky women in the WCTU want to shut down Market Street. Probably even close the bawdy houses. The police have already made occasional raids to keep the decent women happy. That didn’t do no more good than to give the whores a day off while they were in jail.”
“Some women are as well versed in political issues as some men.”
“Well if my old lady is so smart, why did she marry me?”
“Good point, Baldy, good point. You got me on that one.”
With that Coyle climbed into the buggy and drove out of the barn into the rain.
