Coyle did not realize the significance of “I’ll bet,” but soon learned that gambling was a major industry in Denver in the 1800s. In fact, most of the names on the list of witnesses gave “In care of” gambling halls and saloons as home addresses. The majority of the men in Denver came to the Rocky Mountains to go to the gold fields and get rich quick. Gambling provided the second best way to get rich fast. Unfortunately most ended up broke either in the gold fields or gambling halls and had to get a real job or go back to where they came from.
