Denver Becomes Cow Town Every January
The historical National Western Stock Show has been held annually every January at the National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado since 1906. The show has been held every January thereafter with the exception of 1915, when a serious outbreak of hoof and mouth disease in other states caused its cancellation. The first show opened on Monday January 29,1906 and ran for six days. Attendance was estimated at 15,000 and the Grand Champion steer sold for 33 cents a pound, 23 cents over the market price!
The first three years the stock show was held in a circus tent borrowed from the circus. With the coming of the railroads, stock yards were built and an office building was added for buyers and sellers to conduct their business. Eventually more office buildings, three major packing plants, and an arena competed the complex.
The 25th National Western presented the first Rodeo in 1931 in conjunction with the Livestock and Horse Show..The rodeo is now considered one of the biggest indoor rodeos in the country. By 1981, the show had increased to 12 days and included 21 Rodeo performances. The stock show set a still-standing record of $301,000 paid for a Hereford bull.in auction. As memory serves, the bull was sold to a restaurant which sold steaks from the Grand Champion for the rest of the year (or their steaks were labeled as such.)
On the 100th anniversary, attendance had grown from 15,000 to over 700,000 for the 16 day run of the show. The 2017 show tallied 684,580 visitors, the third highest number of visitors.
Many events have been added and almost everyone finds some attraction of interest. The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo is great family entertainment and a trip back to the old west.

New snow Means Better Skiing
Speaking of better skiing, Mikaela Shiffrin won the Woman's Giant Slalom Saturday in Slovenia. Shiffrin is running away in the overall standings in the World Cup professional ski tour. She has double the number of points of second place Viktoria Rebenburg from Germany. Sunday, Shiffrin won the Slalom giving her 39 first place finishes in her career. That is exactly half the number of Lindsey Vonn, also from Vail, Colorado,
who is number one on the list of career first place finishers.
