Camp Hale
Camp Hale was established in 1942 when the site was acquired by purchase from private ownercs and by use permits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. The cantonment (or living area) area for Camp Hale was constructed between Leadville and Red Cliff, Colorado.
East Fork valley. was a major combat training area throughout the life of Camp Hale. Military use of Camp Hale included the 10th Mountain Division, the 38th Regimental Combat Team, 99th Infantry Battalion, and soldiers from Fort Carson conducting mountain and winter warfare training exercises from 1942 to 1965.
The 10th Mountain Division in 1944 fought in the mountains of Italy in some of the roughest terrain in World War II. During World War II, the 10th Mountain Division suffered 992 killed in action and 4,154 wounded in action in 114 days of combat. Soldiers of the division were awarded one Medal of Honor (John D. Magrath), three Distinguished Service Crosses, one Distinguished Service Medal, 449 Silver Star Medals, seven Legion of Merit Medals, 15 Soldier's Medals, and 7,729 Bronze Star Medals. The division itself was awarded two campaign streamers.

Camp Hale–Continental Divide National Monument, is about 110 miles west of Denver and includes a mix of alpine wildlands, historic buildings, and portions of the Tenmile Range. Biden’s move, long sought by Colorado conservation groups, will ensure that a World War II training camp is permanently protected for the enjoyment of generations of Americans who treasure the outdoors and value US history.
