University of Colorado Steeple Chasers
The Steeple Chase is an odd race in which runners go over hurdles and obstacles including a water jump. University of Colorado women have been unusually successful competitors in the Steeple Chase.
Emma Coburn is from Crested Butte, Colorado. In her senior year, 2013, at CU, Coburn became the fourth-fastest American in history and the fastest American on US soil with her time of 9:25.28. She won the NCAA Steeple Chase twice and the Indoor 1 Mile Race once.
Another CU graduate is Val Constien, 25, from Vail, Colorado and a 2014 graduate of Battle Mountain High School. She was also a regular in the Steeple Chase on the Colorado track team..
At the Olympic trials Coburn won the Steeple Chase and won her place on her third Olympic team. Constein paid her own way to Oregon, working a 40-hour-a-week job. Constien entered the year with a personal best of 9:44 — 14 seconds off the Olympic standard. Consgien sad she woke up about two weeks before the trials, and said to herself, "You know, I think I can do this." She ran the Olympic Trial Steeple Chase in 9:18.34 to finish third, and make her first Olympic team,
So now the University of Colorado Buffs have two entries in the Olympic Woman's Steeple Chase.
