They now go through Colorado's San Luis valley both going to their winter and summer nesting areas in Montana, Wyoming, and Canada and in winter they go to Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico.
The difference is the time the Sandhill Cranes spend in Delta and Montrose, and the entire San Luis valley which is in south west Colorado. That was just a stopping over place on their journey. Now they spend more time there and many stay there year around

At about five feet tall, Sandhill Cranes are the tallest birds in the Americas, Researchers are using rocket nets which send nets up and over the cranes. So far 13 of the Cranes have been netted.
Researchers attach either a radio transmitter on some Cranes or color codes leg bands on other Cranes. The object is to find where and why the Sandhill Cranes travel to in their migrations.
