A Day Trip to Guanella Pass
The road from Georgetown over a mountain to Grant connects two major highways: U.S. 285 going southwest to Alamosa and I-70 the main highway that goes across the state from east to west. The connection is called Guanella Pass Scenic Byway.
The Scenic Byway is scenic indeed. At the Pass (the highest point of a road or trail that crosses a mountain) Guanella Pass is at an elevation of 11,660 feet. There is a parking lot at the pass for people who want to look around to see the views. From the parking lot at the Pass one gets an excellent view of
Mount Bierstadt 14,060 in elevation. In the summer if one is lucky, they get a look at members of the herd of Big Horn Sheep that call the Guanella area home.
The attraction to Guanella Pass in autumn is the groves of Aspen. On the day we were there, we saw some trees that were just changing from green to yellow, and whole hillsides of yellow Aspen. Occasionally we would spot some that were farther along in the color change process and had turned orange.. In the right sunlight the hill appeared to glow. Motorists did not mind the 25 mph speed limit because they were dazzled by nature's beauty at it's peak.
For those who are curious, Guanella Pass was named for Byron Guanella in 1953. Guanella was a road supervisor and commissioner in Clear Creek County for nearly 50 years. He spent a good bit of time in planning the 24 mile project.
