Colorado Town Names
The name of Steamboat Springs is thought to have originated around the early 1800s when French trappers thought they heard the chugging sound of a steamboat's steam engine. The sound turned out to be a natural mineral spring, to be named the Steamboat Spring.
Greeley was named after Horace Greeley who said, "Go west young man," He was a politician and editor of the New York Tribune, who came to Colorado in the 1859 Gold Rush. The town was founded as the in 1869, an experimental utopian society and called Utopian, but the name was later changed in honor of Greeley.
Grand Valley, September 1881, the area experienced a land rush settlement and a town site was staked. This town, was first called Ute, then West Denver and finally came to be known as Grand Junction. The name stems from its location at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers.
Longmont, was first called Burlington by the Chicago company that bought the land and sited lots. The town moved away from the river to avoid floods. The new name comes from nearby Longs Peak which in turn is named for named in honor of Major Stephen H. Long, an American army officer and explorer who encountered the mountain in 1820.
Denver was named for James William "Jim" Denver, the Governor of Kansas Territory at the time the town was founded. Governor Denver never visited the town named in honor of him.
