Joe Wolfe of Cripple Creek
Cripple Creek, Colorado is a mountain town that sprung up around the last great gold rush, Joe Wolfe left town to avoid the many people he owed in June 1895. He showed up again in Oklahoma's Chereokee-Strip with his schemes and bogus get-rich fantasies. He did get rich and returned to Cripple Creek.
It's where and when he met an out of work Wild West cowboy performer named Charlie Meadows. The two of them came up with a plan to take advantage of the Federal Government's program to keep beef prices low by allowing cattle from Mexico to be imported without a tariff. That included Mexican fighting bulls.
They arranged to rent a nearby baseball field with its bleacher seats, and Bert Carlton agreed to provide hay for the bulls when they arrived in Cripple Creek. Wolfe appointed all of the town officials as Directors of the Joe Wolfe Grand National Spanish Bull Fright Company. Wolfe named himself the President. Meanwhile Charlie Meadows gave press conferences in Colorado Springs and Denver to create interest and set the dates of the event for August 24-26. Wolfe hired four of Mexico's finest bullfighters. The bulls were angry because they had not been fed since leaving Texas and Bert Carlton would not feed them until he was paid for the hay...in advance. Tickets were sold at $2, $3, and $5. Even the Colorado Humane Association could not stop the grand event.
Never-the-less Missouri Joe turned into Senor Jose in a large black sombrero, a tight green velvet jacket and trousers with silver decorations. A crowd of 3,000 was slightly entertained but mostly disappointed. The second day 300 people showed up. The third day the exhibition was cancelled. Shortly thereafter
El Presidente Jose Wolfe fled to Florida where he operated a fancy restaurant for years.
The only bullfight EVER in the United States was staged in Cripple Creek Mining District 1895.
Trophy Hunting Council Disbanded
Struggling wildlife around the world scored a big win when the deceptively named International Wildlife Conservation Council was disband by the Federal Interior Department. The IWCC was staffed by individuals with a vested interest in making it easier to hunt and kill imperiled species. Heads, hides, and tusks were imported by members of the Council.
Senate Passes Public Lands Bill
Colorado's two Senators authored a bipartisan bill to end the massive maintenance backlog of national parks upkeep.
Cory Gardner (R) and Michael Bennet (D), both from Colorado, combined and cooperated in getting the $20 billion bill passed. Gardner said,"Today the Senate passed not only the single greatest conservation achievement in generations, but also a lifeline to mountain towns and recreation communities hard hit by COVID-19."
Senator Bennet added, "After a decade of leading this effort, I'm thrilled the Senate finally passed full funding for Land and Water Conservation Fund." He and the Democrats would have liked more of the Great American Outdoors Act provisions in it.

What steps do you take if a tiger is running towards you? Big ones!
