A small town 26 miles North-East of Gunnison, is the home of about 1,600 people. The name of the town is Crested Butte, but it is also known as "The Last Great Ski Town in Colorado".and "The Wildflower Capitol of Colorado.
Originally Crested Butte was a silver mining area and when the market for silver decreased because of the law 1893 in which the government stopped buying silver. Coal mining became the major form of industry and employment in Crested Butte.. The coal mines markets begin to shrink and eventually closed down. Crested Butte had become nearly a ghost town when I drove through there on my way to Taylor Reservoir for fishing in the 50s..
In 1960 a ski facility was built and ski Crested Butte became a well-loved but little known ski area.Since the 1970s, several companies have attempted to mine molybdenum on Mount Emmons (called the "Red Lady") near Crested Butte. In 1977 W Mitchell was elected mayor of Crested Butte and led a campaign which stopped AMAX from building a billion-dollar molybdenum mining operation.
Crested Butte is short on both workers for the ski area and housing for them to live."The economy is broken when when you can't afford to live where you work in the same place," Rob Zillious, the town Finance Director said.to the Town Council The Council is now considering an "Empty House Tax" on second homes that are only occupied during ski season or two weeks during summer vacations. The population has probably increased since the 1,600,nobody knows for sure how many people live there full time.
