Hale Irwin
Most people first heard of Hale Irwin as a football player at the University of Colorado. He started as a quarterback, but was switched to defensive back by Coach Eddie Crowder. As a defensive back he was a two-time All-Big Eight defensive back, and academic All-American. In his last two years, 1966-67, Colorado was a winner, 7-3 and 9-2 in the Big Eight conference and won the Bluebonnet Bowl game.
We assumed he was just playing college golf for amusement or at best to stay in shape for football. But golf was his real interest. He won the individual NCAA championship in golf in his senior year in 1967 and turned professional the following year.
Irwin had 20 victories on the PGA Tour beginning with the 1971 Sea Pines Heritage Classic and finishing with the 1994 MCI Heritage Golf Classic, and during his career he won prize money of just under six million dollars. He played in all of the nations that hold golf tournaments. Of the PGA tournaments he won 3 U.S. Open championships in 1974, 79, 90. He was considered to be among the best golfers during his regular and senior player days.
Hale Irwin is definitely the best Golfer to graduate from the University of Colorado.
