Pandemic and The Oil Industry
The global oil industry has collapsed, demand is down, prices are down to 1970-80 levels, and profits are shrinking. The COVID-19 has built up an unprecedented supply glut. Giant oil companies have lost billions and cut jobs. Hundreds or even thousands of smaller oil companies have gone bankrupt.
The situation is the result of years of organizing in such a way that exposed the harms of OPEC and other such cooperatives that have controlled the market and held industrial countries hostage. The pandemic has speeded up efforts and policies to find more affordable forms of energy.
Colorado's Gas and Oil industry has not been immune. Before most of us had ever heard the word "coronavirus," Colorado’s oil and gas producers were already bracing themselves for a rough 2020. Coupled with persistent industry complaints about the new health and safety regulations.the economic outlook had plenty of drillers worried.
“Economic and regulatory uncertainties, along with exploration and production optimizations, may translate to stagnant or decelerating job growth in 2020,” said a group of economists at the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business in a December publication. The spread of COVID-19 and what had already figured to be a challenging year for the oil and gas industry has quickly turned into a bloodbath.
