The Wrong Stuff
What do Astronauts eat on? Flying Saucers!
What is an astronaut's favorite place on a computer? The space bar.
How do you get a baby astronaut to sleep? You rocket.
Why did the cow jump over the moon? Because the farmer had cold hands!
How do you throw a party for an astronaut? You have to plan-et.
How do you know when the moon is going broke? When it's down to its last quarter.
The Right Stuff
Longmont, Colorado (my hometown) was known for it's sugar factory. Denver relatives referred to it has Cow Town because of the rather smelly feedlots close to town. Now forty-five years later a ritzy subdivision sits on the hill where the feedlots stood, and Longmont is known as the hometown of Astronaut Vance Brand.
Brand took multiple trips into space. One notable 1975 mission required Brand and two other Astronauts to dock with a Soviet's Soyuz spaceship. The docking went perfectly and the two crews interacted cordially while their countries continued with their cold war.
Four the next four years engineers worked on a docking system that would allow two spaceships to fly together as in the International Space Station. The two crews studied each other's languages so there would not be miscommunications in space. Brand tells about his first training trip to the Soviet Union.
"You have to remember, we were in the Cold War and it was at its peak. I hoped the Soviets were friendly. As I stepped out of the plane, you could tell they were all for the mission. There were little kids with flowers running up to us and a big crowd there."
After the historic rendezvous mission with the Soviets, Brand went on to command three space shuttle missions.
Taken from Coloradan the alumni magazine of the University of Colorado, where Vance Brand earned degrees in Bus'53 and Aero'60.
Endangered Species Act
I'll see you in court if I don't see you in the forest.
Seven major environmental groups sued the federal administration over new rules they say would gut the Endangered Species Act. Species designated as "threatened" would not get the same protection as those classified as "endangered." Unless officials can reasonably determine that environmental damage will likely damage a protected species the officials will be barred from protecting that habitat.
Major League Baseball
As of this writing, MLB owners and players have come to an impasse as to the number of games in a shortened season and the percentage of pay for players in a shortened season versus a full schedule.
And The Big Bad Wolf Said...
Michael Phillips is considered a well-recognized wolf expert. He has conducted extensive wildlife research. Phillips is the author of The Wolves of Yellowstone.
The popular conception is that the wolf is a vicious predator and skilled killer. For the real wolf Phillip says, "Life is a daily struggle. Starvation is a common cause of death. Puppies suffer the most of all. Most efforts to hunt come up empty pawed.
Renowned wolf expert L. David Mech, PhD. and senior research scientist for the U.S. Department of Interior says "Re-introducing wolves in western Colorado could connect the entire North American wolf population from Michigan through Canada and Alaska through the Rocky Mountains into Mexico. It would be difficult to overestimate the biological and conservation value of this achievement." Colorado is a critical link.
Re-introduction of wolves in Colorado will be a ballot issue in this year's November election.
