I'd rather fight 100 structure fires than one wildfire. With a structure fire you know where your flames are, but in the woods it can move anywhere; it can come right up behind you. ~Tom Watson
Humor starts like a wildfire, but then continues on, smoldering, smoldering for years. ~Robert Orben
Due to climate change, wildfires are growing in size, frequency, and intensity, and wildfire seasons are becoming longer. ~Mikie Sherrill
Fire Update
Snow slowed the fires enough that most residents were able to return to their homes, but they are told to be ready to evacuate if the fires start again after the snow melts.

Science has even shown us why to restore the gray wolf. In those landscapes where gray wolves are protected from human persecution and occur in ecologically effective numbers, scientific observations verify that the restoration of a natural balance has been initiated. Fact can bring perspective that guides decisions to enable the sustainable management of our public lands and wildlife.
Elk Populations are estimated at 286,000 elk in Colorado. Hunters kill 40,000 elk per year. A gray wolf consumes about one elk per month. 500 wolves could be expected to consume about 6,000 elk per year -about two percent of the elk population after hunters have killed their fill.
Livestock totaled 1,980,000 cattle in "wolf county" in 2015. Confirmed loss of cattle to wolves in 2015 there was 148.
"Please help us restore that balance by restoring gray wolves to Colorado. Howl Yes to Proposition 114." Delia Malone, Wildlife Chair, Colorado Sierra Club

Probe Collects Surface Material From Asteroid
Scientists, and employees of Lockheed Martin celebrated when a spacecraft collected the first-ever dust sample from an asteroid this past week. The spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, was designed and built at Lockheed Martin at the facility in the foothills west of Littleton, Colorado.
The asteroid is 200 million miles from Earth. The spacecraft was launched by United Launch Alliance which is based in Centennial, Colorado. It took two years to get to the asteroid. Upon arrival scientists were surprised to learn the surface is rockier than they assumed it would be. There is one huge boulder that is about about two stories tall. They named it Mount Doom.
OSIRIS-REx did not land on the asteroid, Bennu, The spacecraft hovered a few feet above the surface and lowered an arm equipped with a vacuum cleaner-like attachment which sucked in a few ounces of space dirt to be analyzed. In ten seconds the spacecraft pulled away. If the scientists did not get enough of a sample, the OSIRIS will make another approach.

Poem About Objects in the Sky, The Moon
by Robert Louis Stevenson
The moon has a face like the clock in the hall,
She shines on thieves on the garden wall,
On streets and fields and harbor quays,
And birdies asleep in the forks of the trees.
The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,
The howling dog by the door of the house,
The bat that lies in bed at noon,
All love to be out by the light of the moon.
