Excerpt from Two Miles High and Six Feet Under
Coyle heard the swooshing sound of a sled bottom scraping against ice. Half a split second later he was hit in the midsection with the force of a locomotive. He heard all of the air in his lungs escape with a whoosh. In the darkness he heard the thud of his head hitting the street. Coyle had no way of knowing how long he had been unconscious, but he heard voices, and when he opened his eyes there was a hand offering to help him to his feet.
Coyle took the hand and less than gracefully regained a standing position. Unsteady to be sure, but standing. A quick look around revealed a pale and shaken Sarah clinging to Onie. Several passersby whispered to each other and stared. Coyle realized he had blacked out for only a short time.
“It’s okay,” Coyle said, and looking directly at Sarah, “right as rain and all that.”
“You better be okay. That man just saved your life,” Sarah said.
Then Coyle looked down at the hand that was holding his arm to steady him. He looked at the face that went with the hand and saw a dazzling grin.
“Mr. Christmas! Hello, Charlie Christmas. What happened?”
