Butterfly Pavilion
Butterfly Pavilion is at the Center for Invertebrate Research and Conservation (CIRC) and will be a 60,000-square-foot, world-class research lab with an accredited zoological facility to serve as the preeminent local, national and global hub for invertebrate knowledge, conservation, inspiration and connection.

Last year over 60,000 learners visited BPs to benefit from on-sight and or classroom programs. Additionally BP is proud to lead research efforts to improve and increase conversation that have value for industry and residential property. In 2023 even greater numbers are anticipated.

Saving Beagles
Government inspectors found that beagles in a facility in Cumberland, Virginia. were being killed instead of receiving veterinary treatment for easily treated conditions. Nursing mother Beagles were not fed or were given food that had maggots, mold, or feces in it.

Not 40, not 400. but over 4,000 beagles were confiscated (rescued) from this facility by the U.S. Humane Society in partnership with the Federal Government. Information gathered from various animal testing sites has proven to be inaccurate or wrong. "Non-animal approaches have shown to be more reliable." said Kathleen  Conlee, HSUS vice president of Animal Research.

Judge Norman Moon remarked that Beagle puppies remained in their enclosures as they were hosed down with cold water leaving them shivering." That is why they are afraid of running water.

Abby Avery, director of Adams County Shelter took in 45 rescued Beagles,  noted that she knows why Beagles were selected as test subjects, "They are so forgitving. They are loyal to a fault. To watch them actually become dogs again, it is amazing."

Puppies For Holiday Presents
So this holiday season, definitely avoid the impulse to buy the fluffy puppy sitting in the window of the pet store just because the kids would love it. Instead, really think about whether it would be a good idea or not to add to your family. Unfortunately, Christmas is the time of year when many pets end up being given as holiday presents only to end up as products of the shelter system weeks later.
Picture

Avoid impulsive decisions. Buying a pet is not the same as buying a pair of shoes. It should not be a light impulse one day when you’re at the mall. It’s a decision that should involve the entire family.

Are the kids old enough to help take of the dog. If the answer is no, don't buy a puppy. Are they old enough to realize a puppy is a baby dog and should be handled gently.

Do you know if anyone is allergic. If you haven't had a pet in the house before, you might not know if you or your children are allergic. Discovering an allergy after you've adopted a pet may mean you'll have to take it back, which can be hard on the animal.

Holiday decorations can be harmful Holiday plants can be quite dangerous, according to American Humane: lilies can be deadly to cats, poinsettias can upset animals' digestive systems, mistletoe is toxic, and holly can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Even pine needles can be toxic if your pet eats them.

Training a new pet during the cold winter months is more difficult than in the spring or summer       Dr. Becker recommends waiting until the spring or summer to adopt a pet, because the cold and wet of the winter can make house training more miserable. It's also a less-ideal time because your kids will be going back to school soon after the holidays.

Wait until the holidays are over. The holidays are a busy time. So if you are serious about adding to the
family, consider doing so when things start to quiet down in January and February. That way, you can have the entire family sit down and discuss everything involved. That way you have time to do your homework, get all the supplies you will need, and head down to the local shelter in order to adopt rather than shop.

"Always respect your superiors; if you have any."

"Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to."
"Character is the architect of achievements."

Bumble Bee, Brand Of Tuna

Ads say "It is good for you," but is it? Of the 119 vessels that are contracted by Bumble Bee and are Taiwanese-flagged, 13 have violated Taiwan Fishery Agency regulations and are on the Unreported and Unregulated list. They are alleged to engage in shark finning and illegal fishing.
Under federal law, U.S. fishermen are only allowed to remove and sell shark fins after bringing the animal to shore—as long as the shark was legally harvested. Most fins will end up as the main ingredient in shark fin soup.
As one of the leading canned tuna companies in the market, Bumble Bee and its Taiwanese parent Fong Chung Formosa may be the supplier of canned tuna in Colorado and other states' grocery outlets. Americans want better. We want to know that the seafood is sourced sanitarily and sustainably. Readers should check labels and not buy Bumble Bee Tuna.

News
Western Environmental Law Center won a scientific-based court case concerning the gray wolf. The WELC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Servicse resumed recovery efforts to restore the gray wolf to the list of
Endangered Species Act protections. States can not hold wolf hunts like the one that killed thirty percent of  Wisconsin's wolfs in three days.

The U.S.Supreme Court agreed to hear case brought by the Navajo Nation impacting tribal water rights in the Colorado River Basin. Several water districts and States have stated that the river is fully allocated. Tribes are working to prove that their water rights are recognized and respected. For the last two decades the drought has cut the amount of water available. Scientists have said water managers should plan on a forty percent cut in available water.

COVID has caused populations human and animal to (to put it bluntly) gain weight. The squirrels in Zion National Park are not exceptions. The park has started a Fat Squirrel Week to help "Rotund Rodents" drop a few pounds. The extra weight comes from garbage visitor leave behind, banana peels, and apple cores, etc.The humans are encouraged to  become "Squirrel Stewards" and not leave goodie waste behind.

Pets and the Environment
Pets normally means cats and dogs, but consider rabbits, ginnypigs, fish and other reptiles most are vegetarians..

Where to get a pet? Adopt don't shop, it is a good slogan that will save you lots of money and save the lives of the millions of animals in shelters.. A side benefit, almost all shelters spay or neuter pets in their care.

Don't overfeed your pet. Twice a day prevents long periods of hunger. The larger meal in the morning gives the pet energy for its daily activities and the smaller evening meal will suffuse while the pet is sleeping. Generally, it is a good idea to give your pet slightly less.than what you think they need.

The more they eat the more waste material (poop) that is produced environmently. America's dogs and cats account for five tons of poop each year. Some suggest flushing dog waste down the toilet. Cat waste should not be flushed  because it contains chemicals that  can be dangerous to fish.

Taking your dog for a walk is good exercise for both you and the dog. Be sure to have a plastic bag to use to clean up after your dog if it hears the call of nature during the walk. The people on your walking route will appreciate you for this act of good citizenship.

When the time comes, as it surely will, cremation is .more environmentally satisfying and there will not be the danger of other animals digging up a backyard burial. Backyard burials are illegal in many States. There are pet cemeteries and degradable caskets if you feel the need. Remember the good times and the love you shared.

Colorado Skiing
A sure sign that winter is not far away. Arapahoe Basin, and Winter Park have added Wolf Creek Pass to the list of operating ski resorts open.
By the late 1800's, Colorado's high country was bursting with men in search of a grand fortune, and they arrived to find a beautiful and harsh environment. covered with snow. Scandinavian miners who joined the influx of immigrants offered a solution. They taught their fellow mountain dwellers how to craft skis and use them to travel through the snow,

Rev.John Lewis Dyer, a hearty man of God, skied his preaching circuits in pursuit of his religious commitments. Rev.Dyer was one of the first Methodist ministers to tour Colorado's high country mining camps.  He come to Denver, Colorado, from Minnesota in 1861.  John Dyer was 50 years old when he began the mining camp circuits and he became acquainted with Norwegian snowshoes from split pine logs.  The tips were boiled and turned up for his trips over 13,188 foot Mosquito Range where snow often drifted 20 feet deep.

For 20 years, Father John Lewis Dyer preached the circuit traveling from mining camp to mining camp.  As a result, he became known as the "Snowshoe Itinerant."  The title "Father" was given to him because of his concern for the people.

During World War II, troops from the Tenth Mountain Division trained for combat on skis at Camp Hale near Leadville, Colorado. After the war ex-ski-soldiers returned to Colorado and skiing for recreation took off. Towns like Vail started from nothing to become glamorous (expensive) ski resorts.Other towns that were established mining towns such as Aspen, Crested Butte, and Steamboat Springs found new life as ski magnets. And as homes for Olympic skiers.

San Luis, Colorado
The San Luis Valley is a large flat area between two mountain ranges, the San Juans and the Sangre de Cristos. This high desert is known for growing potatoes. The main town is Alamosa, the home of Adams State University. About 45 minutes drive time south of Alamosa is the town of San Luis. In the 1840s Mexico granted more than a million acres of land in the valley to squatters to encourage the settlers to move north.

Mexico ceded that land to the U.S. after the Mexican War. The U.S. honored the Mexican grant. A little town was started, thus San Luis became the first town in what is now Colorado. To this day, most of the residents are of Mexican heritage and many of them are descendants of the original settlers from Mexico.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, or lack of them, this is a beautiful place to visit and the scenery is one step above beautiful.

There is a parking lot at the beginning of a trail that leads to the top of a mesa. At the top of the mesa is the
Shrine of the Stations of the Cross. Along the 3/4 mile hike up the easy trail there are fifteen stopping places called stations with beautiful bronze statues depicting scenes of Jesus's life on his way to the cross. Many stop to meditate or pray at the stations but one is not required or even expected to do so.

From the top of the mesa there is a 360 degree view of the San Luis Valley. It is a memorable experience and a part of Colorado which is interesting to visitors to Colorado's oldest town.

Quotes
One reason that birds matter - ought to matter - is that they are our last, best connection to a natural world that is otherwise receding. They're the most vivid and widespread representatives of the Earth as it was before people arrived on it. - Jonathan Franzen

Birds are indicators of the environment. If they are in trouble, we know we'll soon be in trouble.
- Roger Tory Peterson

It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds. - Aesop

The more often we see the things around us - even the beautiful and wonderful things - the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds - even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less.

Bird Census
If you where born in 1970, the bird population then as compared to now was three billion more birds than there are now. That is billion with a B Common birds—the species that many people see every day—have suffered the greatest losses, according to the study. More than 90% of the losses (more than 2.5 billion birds) come from just 12 families including the sparrows, blackbirds, warblers, and finches..

The first-ever comprehensive assessment of net population changes in the U.S. and Canada reveals across-the-board declines that scientists call “staggering.” All told, the North American bird population is down by 2.9 billion breeding adults, with devastating losses among birds in every biome. Forests alone have lost 1 billion birds. Grassland bird populations collectively have declined by 53%, or another 720 million birds.

“We want to keep common birds common, and we’re not even doing that,” said Pete Marra, a study coauthor who now directs the Georgetown Environment Initiative. Volunteers in Colorado have spent the last couple of months setting up and taking down 25 nets daily. Birds fly into the nets and volunteers remove the birds and weigh them, put a tiny identifying band on their leg and try to send the bird on their way in half and hour or less. Two tail feathers from from each bird is the least invasive way to collect DNA information.  The studies have shown that some of the smallest birds migrate the greatest distances

In Colorado the populations statistics are gathered by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies." Our work doesn't happen without work," said Jacob Job, associate director of the Bird Genoscape Project. What is the condition of the bird's  habitat-where  they breed, eat, and rest, and what is behind the population decreases.

Camp Hale
Camp Hale was established in 1942 when the site was acquired by purchase from private ownercs and by use permits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. The cantonment (or living area) area for Camp Hale was constructed between Leadville and Red Cliff, Colorado.

East Fork valley. was a major combat training area throughout the life of Camp Hale. Military use of Camp Hale included the 10th Mountain Division, the 38th Regimental Combat Team, 99th Infantry Battalion, and soldiers from Fort Carson conducting mountain and winter warfare training exercises from 1942 to 1965.

The 10th Mountain Division in 1944 fought in the mountains of Italy in some of the roughest terrain in World War II. During World War II, the 10th Mountain Division suffered 992 killed in action and 4,154 wounded in action in 114 days of combat. Soldiers of the division were awarded one Medal of Honor (John D. Magrath), three Distinguished Service Crosses, one Distinguished Service Medal, 449 Silver Star Medals, seven Legion of Merit Medals, 15 Soldier's Medals, and 7,729 Bronze Star Medals. The division itself was awarded two campaign streamers.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 designated 53,804 acres of the central Rocky Mountains a national monument.  Camp Hale–Continental Divide National Monument, is about 110 miles west of Denver and includes a mix of alpine wildlands, historic buildings, and portions of the Tenmile Range. Biden’s move, long sought by Colorado conservation groups, will ensure that a World War II training camp is permanently protected for the enjoyment of generations of Americans who treasure the outdoors and value US history.

Quotes
“It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.” John Steinbeck

Official Colorado State Fish
Many species in the west have decreased in numbers or are entirely extinct, but the greenback cutthroat trout made a beginning for a comeback. In a discovery in 2012, it was confirmed a naturally reproducing population was found in Bear Creek west of Colorado Springs. The Division of Wildlife hoped that population could hang on. It has apparently grown in numbers and wildlife scientists started stocking greenback cutthroat from Bear Creek into waters of Herman Gulch, a popular hiking trail off of I-70. The stocked greenbacks are now at age to reproduce.

Colorado Trout Unlimited said the Herman Gulch project is great news for the state's watersheds. Trout Unlimited thanks the many of the nonprofit's volunteers who carried tanks of water loaded with greenback fry to an area in Herman Gulch's stream for a series of years. Executive Director David Nickum said, "Wildlife advocates will be watching to see if reproduction is sustainable in places in Colorado."

Maybe Colorado's Official state fish, the Greenback Cutthroat Trout, can make a comeback to their previous numbers and impact in their the place in the environment.
