Keensburg, The Wild Animal Sanctuary
Illegal marketing of captured wild animals is the third largest illegal money maker in the world. TWAS is a sanctuary to give neglected animals living in unsuitable conditions a stable forever home.The purpose is to prevent and alleviate cruelty to animals which are abandoned or were subject to deprivation or neglect, by providing care and boarding.

Most people are not aware of the cost of owning a tiger. In one year an average sized tiger weighs 400 pounds. A tiger eats 3,000 pounds of meat in a year. The total cost of maintaining an average tiger for a year is $25,000.

Tigers need a pool to play in and toys to stimulate them. A large extra strong rubber ball costs $200. Try to find a Veterinarian that will take on a tiger as a patient. TWAS rescues animals from dreadful circumstances and bring them back to the wide open space of large acreage habitats where they have plenty of freedom, exceptional diets and proper veterinary care for as long as they live. Their goal is to give them a life of dignity and respect and to make their life as it would be if they could choose. TWAS also works tirelessly to educate humans about the causes of, and solutions to, the Captive Wildlife Crisis.

Native Native Americans
The prevailing story of how humans came to Americas was that some 13,000 years ago, there were small bands who walked across a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. Eventually they made their way to the warm part of North America and eventually into South America.

Now the current theory is that the first humans came 1,000 - 2,000 years earlier. They did not walk across but traveled by boat down the Pacific Coast. Supporting that idea are archeological sites along the west coast that are 14,000 - 15,500 years old according to DNA samples from some of the oldest human remains.

Understandably, scientific battles have scientists taking taking sides as our knowledge and methods evolve.

Understanding Wolves
The Green River corridor holds promise of a pathway for grey wolves to disperse from Wyoming to Colorado. So why aren't they using it? Wolves are having a hard time knowing where it is safe and where they will be hunted. It is estimated that in the United States one hundred packs have lost pups in the last year. In some places they are protected. Wolves are trapped in a web of overlapping and intersecting barriers that complicate their existence from protected territories within indigenous lands and national parks to hostile country across Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming.

After the election permitting reintroducing grey wolves to the state it's up to the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife to not only get wolves into the state, but to make sure that they can survive.

Kill Orders
The Togo pack of wolves in Washington State consists of five adults and four pups. In 2018 two adults were killed. The order has been given five times since then to kill two more of the adults. To help save the wolves, money can be contributed to: Friends of the Earth Action. Check their web site to learn more about the details if you are interested.


Ann Axrell Morris
During the 1920-30s a  pioneer woman archaeologist named Ann Axtell Morris studied the Dine' as the Navajo call themselves. Her story is now being made into a movie that is scheduled to be released later this  year. The makers of the movie, Canyon Del Muerto, were the first film crew allowed in to film the canyons and interlocking geology. This area is called the the heart of the Navajo nation by the Navajos. The 35-person film crew have captured spectacular picturesqueness of the landscape.

The people, the Navajos call the Ancient Ones built a surprisingly complex civilization and then mysteriously disappeared. Much the same as the civilization in Monte Vista in Colorado disappeared. Although there are many theories about how and why, no one can say for sure why the people disappeared from either of  the two communities. 

Ann Morris returned several times and stated that was the place where she was the happiest. She wrote once that each time she return it looked different..

Wolves

When wolves are considered as nuisances, especially to farmers and ranchers, humans are inclined to kill wolves. Killing one member of the pack can change the whole nature of the pack. Younger members of the pack do not have the experience to stay away from humans and the dangers of hunting the human's cattle and sheep. The older members of  the pack will keep the pack far away from humans. The soul of the pack comes from the elders (four years old or older) and their experience.

Humans have killed at least a million wolves from the time humans arrived from Europe until now. Wolves by nature act and behave in a predictable way. As older wolves are killed and the pack becomes more unpredictable it makes them more dangerous, defeating the reason for killing them.

Mountain Lions will ambush their prey and bears rely on brute force and size to overpower their prey. Wolves have stamina and get the herd to run. In the chase each wolf has a specific role. They expose the slower and weaker prey and in their own way, wolves keep the herds more healthy and strong.

Federal Judge: Blocks ConocoPhillips' Development Project
According to court documents Alaska District Judge Sharon Gleason vacated Bureau of Land Management approval of a six billion dollar development project proposed by ConocoPhillips. She ruled that there were omissions in greenhouse emissions analysis.

ConocoPhillps also failed to address comparable alternatives and options to the project the judge wrote.

The Story of the Orphan Train
In the 1850s the number of orphaned children exploded. A young minister named Charles Brace became concerned with the number of street children often called Street Arabs. Some children were orphaned when their parents died of epidemics such as typhoid, yellow fever, or the flu. Others were abandoned because of poverty. In the 1850s there were 10-30 thousand orphans in New York, a city of only 500,000.

Brace's Children's Aid Society hit on the idea of sending the children in a train to the rural mid-west to be adopted and raised by farmers. Many were adopted as cheap labor. Records show some became teachers, doctors, or clergy. The orphan trains were funded by wealthy donors and ran from 1854-1929.
The foster children's program was established in 1930.

The song about the trains, "Take Us In" accurately portrays the trains and the children's search for someone to take then in.

MBTA
The Migratory Bird Treaty Acts of 1918 (MBTA) is a federal law to implement the convention for  the protection of migratory birds between the United States and Canada. The last administration sought to weaken the act.

For example under U.S. Fish and Wild Life Service rules the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 be changed to read that BP would not pay a $100 million fine for killing an estimated one million birds.The case is still in the court system. The Biden - Harris administration is fighting to block the reversal and in fact strengthen the MBTA.

Dinosaur Remains Discovered
Denver Museum of Nature and Science is funding research in northwestern New Mexico. One of the team Erin Spear, Ph.D.,  spotted a fragment of a skull of tube-crested dinosaur. The only other sample of the dinosaur, Parasauolophus Cyrtocristatus was found in 1923 in the same area.The name means "near
crested lizard." The dinosaur lived in North America about 73 million years ago. This genus is known for its large and elaborate cranial crest.

Eagle Restoration
Our national symbol, the Bald Eagle, was close to extinction throughout it's entire range forty years ago. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) estimated that in the whole state of Colorado there were only three known eagle nests by the end of the 1970s. Loss of habitat, illegal hunting, and most of all, the use of DDT contributed to the devastation of eagles.

DDT was banned in 1972 and incidentally not long after that the numbers of eagles started  to increase. Now the state is host to 200 eagle nests. Additionally protection was provided by the Protected Species Act.  In 2007 eagles were taken off of the list of protected species.

Now in Colorado there are 800 eagles mid-winter in spite of building and population growth. Colorado is a popular place for eagles to winter-over. Nationally the eagle population jumped from a low point of 427 to 9,879 in twenty-three years. Restoration and habitat improvement pays off.

Women Swimmers
Colorado has a history of woman swimmers who have done well in the Olympics.
Amy Van Dyken went into swimming at a doctors suggestion. He thought swimming would strengthen her lungs and help her with her asthma. It is trite to say she took to competitive swimming like a fish takes to water. In high school at Cherry Creek High School in Denver she was not accepted at first by team members  Her swimming ability convinced team members they needed her.

She attended Arizona University and switched to Colorado State where she was at the top of NCAA rankings. She won four Gold Medals in the 1996 Olympics and was  Woman Athlete  of the year by NCAA.. In 2000 she made a comeback from injuries to make the 2000 Olympic team and won two more Gold Medals.

Missy Franklin , .  
Malissa Frankland won five gold medals in the 2016 Summer Olympics at the age of 17, She held various championships and medals in her swimming career.

She lived with her father and mother less than a mile from me. One day while walking with friends on the Highline Canal walking and biking path we were passed by a visibly tall woman with her hair piled on top of her head to make her look even taller.. At her running pace she quickly got ahead of us. Just before she ran out of sight, it dawned on me. I gasped "That was Missy Franklin." Oh how close we come to greatness and don't even know it.

Willows provide food for beavers and are building material for dams. and Beaver ponds. Beaver ponds regulate ebbs and flows of water level. U.S. Women's Soccer
After losing their first match to Sweden, the U.S. Woman's soccer team came back and won their second match with New Zealand 6-1.  Lindsay Horan of Colorado scored a goal to give the U.S. Team a two goal  lead in the first half.

At the U.S. vs. Sweden game, at the referee's whistle, the starting 11 from both teams and the referee dropped to one knee for about ten seconds until the pregame music ended.
