Arapahoe High School
"His intent was evil, and his intent was to injure multiple people," Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robison said after the Friday, Dec. 13, shooting at Arapahoe High School. The victim, Claire Davis, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Davis had no connection with the shooter other than being in his way when he decided to shoot a shotgun at close range and hit her in the head.
The shooter will not be named in this blog. His name will not be given the notoriety he sought in his death.
The motive is still under investigation as to what set off the rampage. What is known is that a male student, 18, at Arapahoe High School entered the school at 12:33 P.M. with a shotgun and a bandolier of shells. In his backpack he carried a machete and three Molotov cocktail bombs. He wore a black hoody and a balaklava.
After he entered through a side door, he shot one shot down an empty hallway, then he went to the library and ask for the whereabouts of the library teacher/debate coach. In the library he shot Claire Davis, set off one Molotov cocktail, setting three book shelves on fire, and fired five more times.
A deputy sheriff and the school safety officer ran towards the shooting as soon as they heard the sound of the first shot. They yelled at students along the way, to get back into their classrooms and stay down. The shooter had to have known they were coming for him by the commotion and loud voices. At that time, some 120 seconds after he entered the school, the shooter turned the shotgun on himself, and expired.
At this time, Monday A.M., Claire Davis remains in stable but critical condition.
Those are the facts, now for the feelings and opinions.
Opinions
The shooter was on the debate team, but was demoted by the coach. One student speculated that the student had a feud with the coach since the demotion in the first part of the semester. Could that be the reason the students emotions exploded?
I think the student/shooter consciously or unconsciously wanted to wanted to be caught because the first shot was in an empty hallway. He must have known that his attire and carrying a shotgun would attract immediate attention.
Arapahoe High School is in south suburban Denver and is considered one of the better schools in the metro area. The shooter lived in a relatively new community that is part of the urban sprawl and most of the households are middle to upper middle class. None of the reasons given for inner city street violence would apply here.
There is too much emphasis on violent video games, TV shows-movies, and violent precedents...school, movie, and mall shootings that encourage "copy cat" instincts. Two state legislators lost recall elections in Colorado because they voted for stricter gun safety laws. This all points to a "if you've got a problem, shoot someone" attitudeSomehow the country is not going the way the founding father envisioned when they said citizens should have the "right" to own guns in order to maintain a well disciplined militia.
I'm pretty sure Claire Davis would agree.
