There is a dessert dish in Austria called Kaiserschmarrn - it's kind of like a sweet raisin pancake with eggs and sugar. It's definitely not something I can eat often, but if I've done well at a race, sometimes that's my celebration treat! ~ Lindsey Vonn
Great Western Sugar
Much of Colorado's farm land was developed by farmers drawn by raising sugar beets for sugar factories in the area. The sugar factories were built by Charles Boettcher who also was one of the investors who started Ideal Cement. On a trip to Europe, he saw what a huge crop that sugar beets produced. Charles and his wife Fannie brought back seeds in their suitcases and started the sugar beet industry in Colorado.
His first factory to extract sugar from beets was in Loveland, Colorado. By 1906, beet sugar factories had been constructed in Rocky Ford, Loveland, Greeley, Eaton, Fort Collins, Longmont, Windsor, Sterling, Fort Morgan and Brush. New owner, Henry O. Havemeyer expanded to Mitchell, Scottsbluff, Gering and Bayard, Nebraska, Billings, Montana; Lovell, Wyoming and Brighton, Colorado. At its zenith Great Western owned and operated 13 of the 16 sugar factories in the west. GW also owned trains and railroads whose cars carried beets from the fields to the factories.
Skeleton forces of full time employees maintained equipment and machinery during the year. During the beet harvest, October to Christmas, the sugar making campaign, many immigrant workers were hired. Children of immigrant families skipped school for weeks at a time during campaign to work in the field "topping" beets...cutting off the bushy leaves and leaving just the root part of the beet to go to the factory.
In the 70s and 80s cane sugar which could be produced cheaper took away the market for beet sugar. A cooperative of farmers bought the company but could not operate it at a profit. Now the sugar factories stand idle and abandoned. The communities have forgotten what brought the people to live there

Wade Phillips
After Sunday's sideline collision with Charger running back Melvin Gordon, and subsequent carting off to the hospital, we became curious about Wade Phillips' background and history. Phillips is 69 and the son of Bum Phillips, legendary coach in the NFL. Wade coached for short stints at the high school and college levels. Here from Wikipedia is a list of stops in Wade Phillip's NFL career.
Defensive Line Coach,
Weather
October in Colorado has been extremely mild and pleasant if you are not waiting to go skiing. The temperatures have been the fourth warmest October recorded. A few individual days have been the warmest October day for that date on record. Lawns and flower gardens are suffering from lack of rain and precipitation. Only one ski area, Arapaho Basin, is open for skiing. Others are making snow and hoping nature will help them.
