Birds have wings; they're free; they can fly where they want when they want. They have the kind of mobility many people envy.~Roger Tory Peterson
Out of Town
We took a trip to Monte Vista, Colorado in the southern part of the state. At the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge the Rocky Mountain Sand Hill Cranes rest in their migrations. In the spring they stop there on their way north to Idaho. In the fall, last of September and early October, they stop on their way from Idaho to New Mexico for the winter.
We were lucky enough to meet a naturalist who showed us where to look for the Cranes. The Sand Hill Cranes stand about four feet tall on their long legs, topped by a long neck. Even at that, they can be very difficult to see. You must stay a great distance away to observe them without disturbing them. I could not see any birds. For sure not any birds four feet tall. With a pair of binoculars the cranes popped into view. They are amazing.
After watching the Sand Hill Cranes until they flew away, which was special to see, we drove to nearby Alamosa which is a close neighbor to Monte Vista. At Adams State University we were able to have Murder in the Rockies placed in the college library collection. Adams State is the second college library to hold Murder in the Rockies. The first being Miami of Ohio University.
