USS Colorado
The attack submarine USS Colorado was christened with a bottle of wine from a Denver winemaker. The christening took place in Groton, Conneticut. The submairne is the fourth Navy ship to be named Colorado. The first was christened in 1856. This three masted frigate was followed by an Armored Cruiser and commissioned in 1905. The third Colorado was USS Colorado (BB-45) commissioned on August 30, 1923.
The newest USS Colorado, the submaire, has a crew of 114 enlisted and 14 officers. The boat (Navy term for a submarine is boat) is capable of shooting surface-to-air missles. The Virginia Class submarine can stay submerged for months at a time. Another fact that is hard to believe is that the nuclear-powered sub will not need to be refueled in its lifetime which is expected to be nearly thirty years.
Homelessness in Denver
The homeless have muitiple reasons for not having a place to stay on a regular basis. Many reasons describing this condition are myths. According to an article in Westword, a weekly newspaper, the truth behind six common myths:
1) Legalizing pot has caused more people to be homeless These stories are largely false. Most of the homeless who moved to Colorado report that they were looking for work. The percentage of out-of-state newcomers who tell homeless shelters that they came to Colorado because of marijuana ranges from 20 to 30 percent.
2) Most people who are homeless are so because it's their fault. NBC News recently reported that this number seems to be decreasing from its historic levels, although 44 percent of Americans still consider poverty to be caused by a poor work ethic. In fact, most who become homeless have fallen under circumstances largely outside their control.
3) Most of the homeless are single men living on the streets. Denver's Road Home, the agency that coordinates the others providing sevices reports: 64% of the homeless in Metro Denver are families with children, 42% of homeless in Denver are women; one third of homeless are working; most commonly reported reasons for homelessness in Denver - loss of job, cost of housing, breakup of family.
4) Most of the homeless aren't looking for jobs. According to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, which conducts an annual homeless survey that reached 3,978 individuals this year, 23 percent of respondents reported that they or their families had received some money from working during the month preceding the survey. Employment-seeking services from organizations like Urban Peak and the St. Francis Center are in high demand among homeless individuals who want to find work.
5) Providing taxpayer-supported housing to the homeless is pointless. Indeed, a national campaign called 100,000 Homes was founded on the principle that it is too difficult for individuals to combat addictions, mental or physical health problems, or find steady employment while simultaneously being homeless.
6) The camping ban hasn't been hard on homeless, as evidenced by the low number of arrests. Leslie Foster, CEO of The Gathering Place, a daytime drop-in center for women, children and transgender individuals, told Westword: If police approach someone and ask them to move along, if the person moves along, no ticket is issued, no services are provided, and nothing has really changed in anyone's life; they have just 'moved along.'
Homelessness is a growing problem. Only by understanding the complex difficulties and the diffenent kinds of poverty will we find better solutions than have been tried in the past. Just throwing money at the problem is not an answer. That's what we think. What's your opinion?
