He found number 1942 just another half-block down Market
Street. Like most of the other houses on the block, it was a twostory
mansion with a stately red-stone demeanor. Five faces
carved in stone adorned the cornice. Rumor had it that they were
the faces of Jennie Rogers, the madam, and four businessmen
she blackmailed for the $17,780 to build her infamous “House
of Mirrors.”
He knocked and was greeted at the door by a striking
dark- haired woman, close to six feet tall, and wearing emerald
earrings. “Come in, dearie.” She made a grand gesture toward an
arched doorway. “Make yourself comfortable in the parlor. Let
me know if you see something you like.”
Coyle mumbled something about being there on business.
The tall madam said, “Yes, and it’s a business doing pleasure with
you too,” and walked away quickly, laughing as she disappeared
down a hallway.
