Places to Visit in Colorado
Pikes Peak, the highest peak in the front range of Colorado's mountains, is easily accessible from Colorado Springs from the east and from Manitou Springs from the west. Easily seen from the plains to the east, it became a symbol of the Colorado gold rush. Gold seekers painted the slogan "Pikes Peak or Bust" on their covered wagons as started their trek from the East.
The history of Europeans and the mountain began long before that. The Spanish in the 1700s named it El Capitain. An expedition led by Lt. Zebulon Pike in 1806, were the first Americans to reach the mountain which was later named Pikes Peak. Because of the November weather, they failed in their attempt to climb the mountain. The first successful attempt had to wait until Edwin James and two members of an expedition led by Lt. Steven Long reached the summit in 1820.
Today there are three ways to the top. One is the highway financed by Spencer Penrose that opened as a toll road in 1915. It replaced an earlier road up the mountain, the Pike's Peak Carriage Road, which dates back to 1888. It was opened by the Cascade Town Company in 1888 and closed in 1902. In 2011 the last six miles were paved, making the road a 19 mile highway for cars to drive to the top. Our intrepid editor assures us that "highway" is a misnomer.
Katherine Lee Bates was a college teacher at Wellesley College. She came to Colorado Springs to teach a summer class. During that summer she went on a hike to Pikes Peak. The view from this mountaintop inspired her most famous poem. "It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind.'" Her most famous poem, "America the Beautiful," was published in 1893. After some revisions, her poem later became the lyrics to the patriotic ballad "America the Beautiful."
There is also a cog railroad with open cars which is a scenic way to the summit. For the hearty, there is the Barr Trail. Although the Barr Trail is rated only Class 1, it is a long and arduous hike with nearly 8,000 feet of elevation gain, and a 13 mile trip one-way. Runners race to the top and back on Barr Trail in the annual Pikes Peak Marathon.
Two special annual events are held on Pikes Peak. New Year's Eve a group of men hike to the top of the 14,115 foot peak to ring in the new year as they have since 1922. They also set off fireworks at the stroke of midnight. Each year they add one more man, thus the name, The Pikes Peak AdAmAn Club. On the Fourth of July the timed car races go up the mountain in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The cars race against the clock and in less than ten minutes cover 12.4 miles and 156 curves. About 130 cars (including electric cars) compete.

What’s the difference between in-laws and outlaws? Outlaws are wanted.
The cross-eyed teacher had trouble controlling his pupils.
I tried walking up a hill without a watch but had neither the time nor the inclination.
I just got hit by a rented car. It Hertz.
I left my last girlfriend because she wouldn’t stop counting. I wonder what she’s up to now.
Concussion Protocol
Going back to Thursday's opening game of the season, Broncos vs. Panthers, Thoughts and Opinions is Bronco biased. After a particular "hit" by the Bronco defense, we said "Oh no, that was head to head. The Broncos will get a big penalty." But there was no penalty. It left us wondering, "Is the Concussion Protocol working consistently from game to game and team to team?" Here is what some experts say.
NBC announcer Cris Collinsworth heaped heavy praise from the broadcast booth on the NFL and their commitment to the concussion protocol and player safety. Something different kept occurring on the field. Officials need to enforce the rules in place specifically outlawing targeting and helmet-to-helmet hits on defenseless players. Trainers and coaches need to pull impaired players from games and caution needs to prevail. ~ Leigh Steinberg Sports and Entertainment Agent
The NFL mandates teams remove players who might have suffered a concussion. At each game, a team of independent medical personnel — including a certified athletic trainer watching from high above the field with the power to the stop the game — is charged with enforcing the NFL’s concussion protocol. ~Adam Kilgore
