He was hired as a Special Deputy Sheriff to help oversee the election of 1897. He was asked to leave when the polls closed. Fearing some foul play, he returned to the polling place with his forty-five. There was a tussle and the Precinct, Clerk Chester Louderbaugh was shot in the wrist. The bullet came to rest in Louderbaugh's coin purse lodged against a penny.
