Canyon of the Ancients
Two weeks ago Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper talked with Interior Secretary Zinke about the National Monument at Canyon of the Ancients.
Hickenlooper announced that. “I have been reassured that it is unlikely any of Colorado’s monuments will be reviewed. Based on my conversation with Secretary Zinke, I am confident that the federal administration will work with the State of Colorado and our federal delegation to ensure our national monuments remain protected,” Hickenlooper posted on his Facebook page the next day.
A week later Colorado Public Radio reported Canyons of the Ancients in southwestern Colorado will be among those reviewed by the Interior Department. President Donald Trump wants the Interior Department to re-evaluate all National Monuments larger than 100,000 acres and designated after 1996. The review is aimed at the Antiquities Act, a 1906 law that allows presidents to unilaterally set aside federal land for protection.
Canyons of the Ancients was created in 2000 by President Clinton. It covers more than 175,000 acres along the Utah border, west of Cortez, Colorado. The area is dense with archeological evidence of early Pueblo cliff dwellings, kivas and rock art.
Monument manager Marietta Eaton says the site holds an "incredible array of cultural resources," with about 100 archeological sites per square mile.
EPA Director Pruitt with his connections to the petroleum industry is rumored to want to make the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument smaller in land space and use the recovered land opened for drilling leases.
We We will follow this controversy as it develops.
Calder Monument
Another visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens convinced me that sculpture is not very high on my art preferences. Given that Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is known as one of America's leading sculptors, I must admit that the works on loan at the Botanic Gardens made me think. Some more than others "spoke to me." I particularly liked the mobiles. The video about Calder's Wire Circus was worth the price of admission to the gardens.
The inventor of mobiles was a pioneer in his field. As such, he is permitted hits and misses.
I recommend each person take some time between now and September 24, if it is possible, and go look for themselves and made their own judgements. Each to his or her own opinion. A great second benefit is that the flowers and plants in the gardens are beautiful at this time of year
