As I sat, looking out the window, thinking of something to write in the blog, a large bird, very large bird, landed in a tree in a neighbor's back yard. It was a Northern Harrier (hawk). After consulting my bird book to confirm the identification, I knew what to write about for the weekly blog.

Pitkin County
Pitkin County, Colorado has the seventh-highest per capita income of any county in the United States. No wonder, the county seat is Aspen. Aspen has oustanding skiing, celebrity residents, and top of the line shopping at top of the line prices.
Those facts are common knowledge, but did you know where Pitkin County got its name? The county was named after Fredrick Pitkin, the second governor of the state of Colorado.
He earned a law degree from Albany Law School in 1859. Following graduation, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to establish the law firm of Palmer, Hooker, and Pitkin. In 1872, he resigned from the firm due to illness, and went to Europe in search of a cure.
Returning to the United States in 1874, he settled in Southwestern Colorado, where he invested in the mining industry. Utilizing his contacts in the mining industry, he announced his candidacy for Governor of Colorado in 1878, and won.
During his two terms as governor, he dealt with a number of crises including the railway feud involving the Atchison, Topeka-Santa Fe, and the Denver-Rio Grande rail companies. He ordered the suppression of the Ute Indian uprising at the Milk Creek Battle.
Pitkin is best known for declareding martial law during the mining strike at Leadville in 1896.The Leadville city police took the side of the mine owners. They recruited new officers from Denver, and "apparently kept up a near-constant campaign of harassment and violence against union members throughout the strike." Possibly as many as six union men were randomly killed during the strike, either by the Denver deputies, or under mysterious circumstances.
Pitkin was unsuccessful in his bid for the U.S. Senate following the strike.
