Denver's Tivoli
The original Tivoli Beer Garden opened in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1843. The name and spirit of the original was borrowed and given to Denver's brewery. The history of this is interesting, but a bit confusing as breweries changed names and owners.
The first two breweries in Colorado were the Rocky Mountain Brewery and Sigi’s Brewery. The Rocky Mountain Brewery, established in 1859 by John Good, eventually became the Zang’s Brewery. The second brewery building was built in 1864 by German immigrant Moritz Sigi along with the Colorado territory's first artesian well. A known local character and Denver councilman, Sigi was successfully building a following. Mr. Sigi had a sudden and tragic horse carriage accident that led to his death in 1874. The brewery was then sold to John Good who no longer owned the Rocky Mountain Brewery (by then known as Zang's). Good changed the name Sigi to Tivoli. Confusing enough to drive a man to drink. And drink they did.
Until Prohibition, Tivoli and Zang’s were the two largest breweries west of the Mississippi. Good kept Tivoli alive during Prohibition by producing “Dash,” a cereal beer with minimal alcohol content. Good’s descendants and his long time business partner, William Burghardt kept the Tivoli growing. By the 1950s, the brewery became one of the largest breweries in the country by producing up to 150,000 barrels a year, which were sold everywhere west of the Mississippi.
When Loraine Good, the last of John Good's decedents died, Carl and Joseph Occhiatio purchased the Tivoli-Union Brewery from the estate. The brothers immediately faced hardship when the Platte River flooded in 1965, damaging the brewery. One year later, a labor strike set the business back. Sadly, in April of 1969, the Tivoli Brewery closed for business.
In the 1980s the building was converted to a shopping center. Since then the building has been turned over to the state. It has been used as a student union for the Auraria campus which includes three institutions: Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and Community College of Denver. While the movie theater was left over from the shopping center days, a tap room and restaurant have been added to the student union aspects of the building. Besides for Tivoli Beer being made in the original copper pipes and vats, the Tivoli Distributing Co. markets about a dozen locally made craft beers. Craft beer is very big in Colorado.

Summer Olympics
Will there be Olympic Games this summer in Rio de Janeiro? Or will they need to be postponed because of the Zika outbreak? Dr. Philip Rubin, former White House science adviser, and 150 other science and medical experts have written an open letter to the U.N. recommending the summer games be delayed or relocated.
There is now evidence that Zika can cause neurological problems in adults in addition to problems in babies as previously thought. The gathering crowds that the Olympics would attract would only accelerate the spread of the disease.
WHO has advised pregnant women not to go to Rio and others to avoid crowded parts of the city.Though it was not said, the implication was "stay away from less sanitary areas." WHO experts point out that Rio is in the southern hemisphere and August when the games are scheduled will be at the beginning of winter there when the mosquito population will be fewer than in the northern hemisphere.

Super Bowl Repeats
It is very rare for the Super Bowl Champion to repeat. None come to mind that have had three quarterbacks trying out for the starting job. And only one of the three with any NFL experience. At the Organized Team Activities (OTA) in Denver, that is what Coach Kubiak is facing in an uphill battle to repeat. Good Luck Broncos. It is our opinion they will need it.
